Notes:

The late crane falls to his fellows gone in long flight over the sea.
And my heart with the crane flies on and on, seeking its rest and thee.
            Charles G.D. Roberts (1860-1943)

"Severance" delivers a dramatic tale of separation and heartbreak with a long, soaring vocal line, poignant harmonies and a driving  tidal feel. A real showstopper for the more advanced singer!

"Severance" won Honorable Mention in the 2005 Diana Barnhart American Song Competition.

Text:

The tide falls, and the night falls,
spacerAnd the wind blows in from the sea,
And the bell on the bar it calls and calls,
spacerAnd the wild hawk cries from his tree.

The late crane calls to his fellows gone
spacerIn long flight over the sea,
And my heart with the crane flies on and on,
spacerSeeking its rest and thee.

O Love, the tide returns to the strand,
spacerAnd the crane flies back oversea,
But he bring not my heart from his far-off land,
spacerFor he brings not thee to me.

- Marjorie Pickthall
