Notes:

This short song is a perfect companion for the darkest night of the year, the Winter Solstice. It is another "secular carol", and was the "B-side" to "December Carol" (also available from Graphite Publishing), featured on a self-produced CD single released in 2002. Merie Kirby's text speaks to the inherent wonder at the cycle of the seasons, and how the darkness of winter is part of a necessary balancing of the Earth. The music also has a balance to it, cyclical yet growing, dark with sparks of light. Darkness inevitably gives way to light, and the longest night is only as dark as we make it.

Solstice Lullaby

Tonight is the longest night
Dream your longest dream
Float through the dark
Dance between the stars
This darkness is the door
Tonight is the key
The circle completes

Turn the key,
Bring in the sun
A little earlier,
A little longer
Every day from now
Growing brighter.
