- 1 Samuel 2:1-10
My heart exults in the Lord; in God I hold my head high.
My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in my victory.
There is no Holy One like the Lord, no one besides you; there is no
Rock like our God.
Do not talk and talk so very proudly, nor let arrogance come from your
mouth,
for the Lord is a God who knows, and his is the weighing of deeds.
The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength.
Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
but those who were hungry are fat with spoil.
The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn.
The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises
up.
The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, he also exults.
He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash
heap,
to give them a seat with princes;
For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and on them he has
set the world.
He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be
cut off in darkness;
for not by might does one prevail.
The Lord! His adversaries shall be shattered; the Most High will thunder
in heaven.
The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to
his king,
and exalt the power of his anointed.
- 1 Samuel 2:1-10
Note:
This piece should be accompanied by one, two or three hand-drummers,
playing middle-eastern instruments such as dumbek, tar, riq, tabl baladi,
etc. Their part is notated in the score on one line, with the syllabic
drumstroke names underneath where lyrics would go in vocal music. Experienced
players should feel free to embellish the given part, and if there is
more than one player, the part may be thinned and thickened depending
on the desired texture and balance.
In the sections enclosed in repeat signs, the strings play the repeated
measure over and over while the singer freely chants the nonmetrical
sections in the appendix. During these sections, and during the semimeasured
chant in measures 96100, the accented syllables of the text are capitalized.
A dancer may be used in the performance of this piece, preferably Middleeast
women’s solo dance (raqs al baladi, raqs al sharqi) or Modern
dance with a Middleeast flavor.
