From Dust You Have Come
An introspective mantra for Ash Wednesday, richly developing over time.
SATB, a cappella
This mantra-like setting of the Genesis 3:19 passage is a contemplative and soaring study of introspection. Written to serve as service music on Ash Wednesday during the distribution of the ashes, this piece is flexible and can be modified slightly to accommodate a shorter or longer part of the service. This piece is likely to be a staple in many church choir’s libraries.
Composer’s Notes
The music for “From Dust You Have Come” is recycled, in that I originally wrote this material for a Maltese Christmas piece for The Rose Ensemble. When I was conducting the Chamber Singers at the Colonial Church of Edina and looking for Ash Wednesday music, I thought about writing an introspective, repetitive piece for the service. This melody came into my head and I thought I could adapt it for the ensemble and for this purpose. The additive process of harmonizing the melody has a quality to it that lets the music develop over time – it gets richer each time we hear it. When we performed this, I was liberal with the repeats, using them on the fly to time the music with the distribution of ashes.
